There’s much more to Amsterdam than marijuana – although its legality remains the main pull for tourists visiting the city. Cafés, not to be confused with coffee shops, are huge in the Dutch capital and are frequented at all hours of the day. Whether you want to have lunch, a pre-dinner aperitif or a late-night catch up with friends, a café is where you go. If beer is what you’re after, you’ll need to visit a bruine kroeg, or brown café, where lagers and ales are served in modest surroundings.
