Perhaps unsurprisingly, the volume of non-alc briefs coming through Barfly’s door of late has shot through the roof. Despite the category still trying to figure out exactly what it stands for and how to brand and pitch itself to consumers, we’re starting to see contenders emerge to lead this exciting and emerging space.
One of those is Three Spirit – a trio of functional, non-alc “elixirs” (their word). They’ve been around for some time now, in non-alc terms anyway, and amongst my social group this is the brand called out more and more by those choosing not to drink.
Put simply, Three Spirit has blended adaptogens, nootropics, herbs and other ingredients into three variants, each designed for different times of the night:
- “Livener” is the pick-me-up, tastes great over tonic or soda water.
- “Social” is the self-entitled “mood-maker”, served over ice with ginger ale.
- “Nightcap” is their version of… a nightcap! Neat, over ice, end of the night.
Four reasons why we love Three Spirit:
- First of all, they taste great. If you’ve ever tried the likes of Sentia and lost your taste buds for a fortnight, you’ll know that a lot of brands launching in the functional beverage category struggle with flavour. Controlling the profile of powerful botanicals, herbs and spices is not easy, but Three Spirit has done it with aplomb.
- Secondly… they really do give you a kick. Many moons ago, and with one foot firmly in the alcoholic beverage camp, I was a little dubious as to whether a non-alc drink could really enhance one’s mood. Three Spirit was the brand that proved to me, hands down, that it can.
- One reason for these first two points is that Three Spirit has been co-developed by botanists and herbalists (the science bit) and bartenders (the drink bit). So they’ve struck the balance between a non-alc drink that gives you a kick and one you actually want to have again and again. That’s pretty rare.
- Unlike many of its non-alc and very science-forward competitors, Three Spirit is building a lifestyle brand. Check out its website (https://threespiritdrinks.com). Instead of a lesson on functional alchemy, its blog is crammed with features on romantic bars in LA, interviews with chefs, dream spa destinations, and tips on how to sleep better.
So, give Three Spirit a go – we think they’re destined for greatness. Cheers!
